The Registered Nurse (RN) plays a critical role in providing patient care and ensuring the well-being of individuals during case stays. RNs collaborate with a team of healthcare professionals (anesthesiologists, dentists and paramedics) to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. This role requires clinical expertise, compassion, critical thinking skills, and the ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, and healthcare teams. 

SmileMD uses a unique care model that brings together the anesthesiologist, registered nurse, and paramedic to add another layer of comfort, safety, and support for patients and dental practices.   
 
SmileMD has a flexible schedule for life and work with no evening shifts.  Surgical days are offered to practices Monday through Saturday and case day schedules are available a minimum of 6 weeks in advance. A typical case day starts at 7 a.m. and ends by 3 p.m., however every case day is different depending on the number of patients seen.  

Responsibilities

Patient Care and Assessment: 
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' physical, psychological, and social needs. 
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans based on the assessment findings and evidence-based practice. 
  • Administer medications, treatments, and therapies as prescribed. 
  • Monitor patients' conditions, vital signs, and response to treatments, and adjust care plans accordingly. 
  • Assist with diagnostic procedures and provide pre- and post-operative care. 
 
Care Coordination and Collaboration: 
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including dentists, anesthesiologists, and paramedics, to develop and implement coordinated care plans. 
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with patients, families, and caregivers to ensure continuity of care and address their concerns and questions. 
  • Place follow up calls to patients following the day of their procedure. 
 
Patient and Family Education: 
  • Educate patients and their families about health conditions, treatments, medications, self-care techniques, and preventive measures. 
  • Provide instructions on post operative care. 
  • Offer emotional support, counseling, and resources to patients and families during challenging times. 
 
Documentation and Recordkeeping: 
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including assessments, care plans, medications administered, and treatments provided. 
  • Document patients' responses to interventions and any changes in their conditions. 
  • Follow legal and ethical guidelines for documenting patient information, ensuring confidentiality and privacy. 
 
Quality Improvement and Patient Safety: 
  • Adhere to evidence-based practice guidelines and contribute to quality improvement initiatives. 
  • Participate in the identification and reporting of adverse events, near misses, and medication errors. 
  • Comply with infection control protocols and maintain a safe environment for patients and healthcare providers. 
 
Professional Development: 
  • Engage in ongoing professional development activities, such as continuing education, to enhance knowledge and skills. 
  • Option to attend monthly RN team meetings. 
  • Stay updated on advancements in nursing practice, technology, and healthcare regulations. 
  • Seek opportunities for specialization, certifications, and advanced nursing roles as desired. 

Skills & Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements 
  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program, resulting in a nursing degree (associate degree in nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)). 
  • Successful completion of the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). 
  • Valid and unrestricted RN license in the relevant jurisdiction. 
  • 3+ years of RN experience (pediatric experience preferred) 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
  • Strong clinical knowledge and skills to provide safe and effective patient care. 
  • Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. 
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with patients, families, and healthcare teams. 
  • Empathy, compassion, and the ability to provide emotional support to patients and their families. 
  • Proficiency in using electronic health record (EHR) systems and healthcare technology. 
  • Understanding of ethical and legal principles in nursing practice. 
  • Physical stamina and ability to perform tasks requiring prolonged standing, bending, lifting, and physical exertion. 
  • Willingness to undergo background checks, drug screenings, and comply with relevant health regulations.
