The Paramedic provides emergency medical care if needed on case days. Paramedics work on a three-person care team from SmileMD (Paramedic, Anesthesiologist, and RN). The paramedic will be comfortable with both pediatric and adult patients undergoing anesthesia in a mobile in-office setting. The paramedic assists with preadmission testing, assesses patients' conditions, and administers necessary medical treatments if needed. This role requires quick thinking, excellent clinical skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and effective communication with patients, medical personnel, and other clinical staff. The paramedic will transport equipment, supplies, and medications to the office, set-up the operating room, and assist the physician in the operating room throughout the day.  
SmileMD has a flexible schedule for life and work with no evening shifts, no Sundays, and no major holidays. Surgical days are offered to practices Monday through Saturday and schedules are available 6 to 8 weeks in advance. The paramedic works 4–10-hour shifts per week with a typical case day starting at 6 a.m. and ending at 4 p.m. 

Responsibilities

Emergency Medical Services: 
  • Administer appropriate medical treatments and interventions based on protocols and patient needs. 
  • Stabilize patients with cardiac events, respiratory distress, or other medical emergencies. 
 
Patient Assessment and Care: 
  • Conduct thorough patient assessments pre and/or post-operation to evaluate vital signs, medical history, and overall condition. 
  • Monitor patients' responses to treatment and any changes in their condition before and after surgical procedures. 
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to develop and implement appropriate care plans tailored to each patient's needs. 
  • Document all assessment findings, interventions, and patient responses accurately and comprehensively for continuity of care and legal purposes. 
 
Medical Equipment and Technology: 
  • Transport medical equipment and supplies to the designated office during scheduled case days. 
  • Facilitate the assembly and disassembly of all equipment and supplies during scheduled case days. 
  • Operate and maintain medical equipment, including GA machines, monitors, AEDs, and other advanced medical devices. 
  
 Patient Transport and Transfer: 
  • Safely transfer patients weighing up to 100 lbs from the operating room to the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) room while adhering to proper lifting and transfer techniques, ensuring patient comfort and safety throughout the process. 
  • Execute the turnover procedures of the operating room with precision and efficiency. 
 
Documentation and Reporting: 
  • Efficiently complete and accurately record patient data and other required documentation in a timely manner. 
  • Systematically monitor, manage, and inventory medical supplies and medications. 
  • Report incidents, observations, and significant changes in patients' conditions needing further investigation. 
 
Communication and Collaboration: 
  • Communicate effectively with patients, their families, care team members, and dental staff. 
  • Provide active support to the physician and RN throughout the entirety of the operational day.  
 
Continuous Learning and Professional Development: 
  • Stay updated on the latest developments in emergency medical care through ongoing training and education. 
  • Participate in professional development activities, such as continuing education courses and medical simulations. 
 
Perform other duties as assigned. 

Skills & Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements  
  • Completion of an accredited paramedic training program. 
  • Active certification as a Paramedic in the relevant state. 
  • Preferred NREMT   
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications 
  • 5+ years of experience as a paramedic 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities  
  • Strong knowledge of emergency medical procedures, protocols, and techniques. 
  • Ability to work effectively in high-stress and fast-paced situations. 
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills. 
  • Highly organized with attention to detail. 
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team. 
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.  
  • Physical stamina and strength to lift and move patients, equipment, and supplies up to 100 lbs
  • Strong ethical standards and the ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  • Willingness to undergo background checks, drug screenings, and comply with relevant health regulations.
